- Mercedes belongs to House Martritz of the Adrestian Empire. But her family’s fortunes were already declining before she was born, and she grew up a commoner in the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, where she and her mother found shelter with the Church of Seiros.

- She was later taken in by a foster father, who decided that she should study at the Officers Academy of Garreg Mach Monastery, the head monastery of the Church.
